What is an appropriate location for an offshore wind farm?

Vineyard Power Cooperative has been working to answer this question with help from its members and the Island community as a whole. Our site selection process is guided by the responses we have received as we look for offshore wind sites that are both economically viable and publicly acceptable. The final answer will be the site that best combines all the factors which our members and others have identified as suitable. That site will both benefit the Island and preserve the qualities that make it unique and special.

This website was created to help everyone better understand offshore wind siting. It provides access to general information about wind power, offshore wind, and background research from many disciplines. It also offers you the opportunity to explore specific information about our siting criteria and the many potential sites we are evaluating. This website contributed to our members playing an active role in making an informed decision in selecting an appropriate location for an offshore wind farm.  The location selected was in the Massachusetts RFI area, blocks 6976, 6977, and 6978 which is directly 12 nautical miles due south of Norton Point beach off the southern coast of Martha's Vineyard.  For more information, on the selected location and the potential lease area, please read our Proposed Commercial Lease in the Documents Section.
